Balance boards (also sometimes referred to as bongo boards) have been around for years and years.? They’re a great way to build co-ordination and balance indoors, ideal for when the surf is flat or it’s raining outside.

For those of you who have never seen one, generally a balance board setup consists of a piece of ply cut into a symmetrical shape (most often resembling the shape of a skimboard, but can also take the shape of a skateboard, depending on the manufacturer).? There’s plenty of options on the market, and plenty more weird and wonderful home-made bongo boards, but from the many we’ve seen some look a lot more appealing and rewarding then others.

One option that we heard about earlier this week is the Goof Board. From a surfers point of view – particularly a longboarders point of view -? this is one of the best we’ve seen. The main reason for this, is that the tubing runs parallel to the board (rather than across it like a lot of other bongo boards), which allows the user to ‘walk’ the board and simulate the feeling of skimming along a wave using the ankles for control.
